With so much competition in the world of freelancing, it’s safe to say that starting a successful freelancing business in 2022 is more challenging than ever before.

According to the freelancing platform, Upwork, as a consequence of COVID-19, 47% of US hiring managers are more likely to hire freelancers in the future than they were before the pandemic.

This is fantastic news for established freelancers who have already built up a customer base.

However, with so much competition, it can be difficult for new freelancers to achieve freelancing success.

If you are new to freelancing don’t be put off by the competition. Just remember that competition is everywhere and YOU CAN build a successful freelancing business!

How?

Find out exactly how with my…

5 top tips on how to start a successful freelancing business in 2022!

1. Define your freelancing goals

Why do you want to work as a freelancer?

Is it because you want to earn some extra money to support your current job?

Do you want to gain experience within a particular industry?

Or is your goal to build a full-time business and have more freedom and flexibility?

Understanding the reason/s you want to work as a freelancer will allow you to structure your path to success and be more successful.

So, whatever your reasons write them down!

2. Choose your niche wisely

Before you start freelancing do some research. Look for a niche that is in high demand and one that you feel you will enjoy working in.

Don’t worry too much if you feel as though you don’t have enough skills or experience to work within the niche you have chosen.

The great thing about freelancing is that it removes those barriers to entry that you often find when applying for an employed job.

As long as you can do your job and do it well then you shouldn’t have any issues.

However, there may be times when further experience is needed.

Depending on how confident you are within your chosen niche, you can either teach yourself and/or gain experience by practicing your skills. Or you can take a course.

There are plenty of courses that are free or discounted that will help you to start your freelancing career.

You can find these courses at:

  • Alison – All courses are free. However, if you want a certificate you will have to purchase one upon completion of the course.

3. Develop a well structured marketing strategy

Once you have decided on the niche you would like to work in it’s time to decide how you will market your services.

The right marketing strategy is fundamental and can make the difference between having tons of clients or having no clients at all!

The type of marketing techniques you choose should be based on your freelancing goals.

For example, if your goal is to use freelancing as a side hustle, then your marketing techniques should be more tamed than if your goal is to build a freelancing business.

That being said, a marketing strategy is always important whatever your goals may be.

When first starting out it’s a good idea to reach out to people you already know who can recommend you and your services.

You can get the word out by telling friends and family, handing out business cards and advertising within your local area.

Other marketing techniques you can use include;

  • Freelancing platforms – a great way to market your services online. You can join platforms such as Fiverr or Upwork.
  • Website – having a website can be very useful to showcase all of your services.

4. Network, network, network

Networking with other freelancers will allow you to share ideas, establish relationships and build connections within your industry.

It can also help you to find the right people needed to progress on aspects of your work that you may find challenging.

5. Always provide a high-quality service

Have you ever had a business provide a fantastic service in the beginning, for the service quality to dramatically drop when you used them again?

I have – and the result was I never used the company again.

You never want to get too comfortable with a client that you allow your quality of service to drop!

Clients who receive a great, consistent service will most likely be back for more! They are also more likely to refer you to their friends and family.

Whoever your customers are – new or old. Make sure to provide every customer with an awesome experience.
